CAB Files

Can anyone Please point me to a place that I can find some documentation on what the sql.ppc.wce5.armv4i.CAB does?

I basically need to know which files are being placed in the handset by deplyoing the CAB file.

Thanks,

Farnaz

The cab file contents are documented here: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/sqlmobile/installsdk.mspx

caan not register server from internet

Hello,
I have two SQL 2K server, both are running fine with public IP address.
i.e.
Server #1: 100.100.100.101
Server #2: 200.200.200.202
I use SQL Server #1 Client Network Utility to create an Alias i.e. SQL2.
The alias has the ip 200.200.200.202 and port 1433
Then I use SQL Server #1 Enterprise Manager to register SQL2 with SQL Server
authentication. (login name: sa and password)
Then I got the following error message:
"SQL2 - SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Connection(Connect("
I tried SQL#1 connects SQL#2 and SQL#2 connects SQL#1, I get the same error
message.
Both server can ping each other.
SQL#1 is behind Cisco router 1720 with direct ip address.
SQL#2 is behind DSL router, but ports 21, 80 and 1433 forward to SQL#2.
I can use FTP and WEB on SQL#2.
Thanks

CA not valid

Hello,
I need first to test SSL-Encryption on an standalone SQL Server 2000 Server.
For this, I became a Personal CA from a friend and the appropriated Trusted
Root CA. I requested it with the User who start the SQL Server services (an
administrator user)
All looks fine under MMC, but SQL Server does not find any 'valid'
certificate... and SetCert too
What the mater?
Is it not possible to use CAs from none official Authorities? Also if my
Server is out of the network?
How can I test for a day without to pay for a longtime valid CA?If SQL is on the same machine as the CA, the CA must have a different name.
The certificate that SQL uses is a machine cert, the same cert that IIS
uses. As a test you could
use IIS to validate the cert using a SSL site on the same machine.

C2 SQL auditing

Hi,
I setup my SQL 2000 Server to use C2 auditing. It is working.
My only problem is that my trace file does not get populated while I am
inserting/updating/select data or anything.
However, when I stop SQL server then my trace file gets populated.
I cannot stop a production SQL server on and off just to collect data and
the trace file is only limited to 200MB so I can wait till the end of day.
I am trying to do a audit report every 2hrs.
Am I doing something wrong? Or this is how C2 works?
I would appreciate all the help!Don't use the C2 auditing. Just create a custom trace that collects the data
you want and you can start and stop it as you need to. Check out
sp_trace_Create in BooksOnLine.

I had to setup C2 for my company just so they can see it in their own eyes.
I recommended them to use Server Side trace, it is more efficiency and
customizable to what they want to audit.
It would make my case even better when I tell them 3 SQL MVPs suggest not to
use C2.
Do you suggest any third party tools for SOX compliance? I am testing Idera
CM right now.
Eventually, I would like to off load the server side trace to the SOX team
since there are over 100 SQL Servers.
I would like to setup and manage so many traces.
Thanks again for the input...I greatly appreciated.

C2 Auditing: How to change to directory to save log files

I need to turn on C2 auditing on a sql 2K cluster server.
I do not have any space on C drive which according to the articles (and bol)
is the default place.
How I can change the directory so these traces can be save into the location
I want.
Any solid experience anyone has on C2?
Thank you,
ktf
Hi
C2 auditing writes to \mssql\data directory for default instances of SQL
Server 2000, or the \mssql$instancename\data directory for named instances.
If you change the default database data location in EM, or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\ MSSQLServer\DefaultData,
it will place them there.

|||Well Mr. Epprecht,
I have C and D drive which are the local drives and S and R from the SAN.
The only location that I can is on S drive. The registry setting is deferent.
Is there a specific registry object for that mater? I can try to run it and
see where it is saving it but is there a specific place that I can change the
setting that is for C2 ONLY?
Other question I have a passive site for disaster recovery (I am not talking
about passive node) do I have to replicate the trace data? The passive site
has a different virtual server name and ip address. As you know the sql is
sleep but I have a third party replication system going. Do you know if I
replace the trace that will be readable at the passive site?
Do you recommend any site for anything on C2?
Thank you,
ktf

How I can change the directory so these traces can be save into the location
I want.
Any solid experience anyone has on C2?
Thank you,
ktfHi
C2 auditing writes to \mssql\data directory for default instances of SQL
Server 2000, or the \mssql$instancename\data directory for named instances.
If you change the default database data location in EM, or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer\DefaultData,
it will place them there.

As you know the sql is

replace the trace that will be readable at the passive site?
Do you recommend any site for anything on C2?

New databases data files will be created in the directory that you have
chanegd on the database tab of the server properties dialog. This directory
does not have to be the same location as the system databases.
If you don't want to create the data and log files in the default
directories you can either overwrite them in the new database dialogs data
file and log file tabs or use Query analyser to specify explicitly the CREATE
DATABASE statement.

C2 auditing on SQL Server

I currently have C2 auditing turned on for a server, and an audit trace file
gets written to the default database directory every couple of hours. Is
there a way to get C2 auditing to write to a separate database for querying?
And is there also a way to turn C2 on/off without restarting the server?
Is C2 the appropriate tool for internal auditing, or is there a
better tool out there for getting reports, etc?
cross posted to .securitytools
Thanks,
-RSHi,
A normal profiler using the properties windows can save the contents to a
table. I am not sure on how tyo automate this in C2 auditing, because
it craetes seperate files.
And is there also a way to turn C2 on/off without restarting the server?
No.
Is C2 the appropriate tool for internal auditing, or is there a better tool
out there for getting reports, etc?
Yes, But might not be useful for reporting. Take a look into the product
from lumigent
http://www.lumigent.com/Downloads/
Have a look into the below site for more information on c2 Audit

pricey. Is there anything that offers a good reporting tool for trace files

C2 auditing ?

Hello there
I just inherited a data farm and I noticed that the person before me had c2
auditing turned on.
I noticed that the trc files date only back to 04/05 and that the last time
a fiel has been modified is yesterday.
the rate of growing out of 200mb should make these files date of once a day
or even 2. does anybody know how I can check if c2 is still turned on ? or
any idea why that is ? I suppoe i can wait another couple of days and see
but ...
thanks

You can use sp_configure look for the running value for c2 audit mode.

c2 auditing

Is there any way to granularise what c2 monitors? I have a system which is
generating thousands of trades and this is in turn generating a 200Mb c2

That would mean it isn't a c2 trace anymore... ;-)
You can create your own server-side traces, however, and make them autostart
using sp_procoption.

c2 audit on SQL 7?

dear gurus,
as far as i know, c2 mode is doable on sql 2000 running
in NT4.
is it any possibility to have c2 auditting on SQL7 in NT4?
any seizing tool to evaluate the windows/sql resource
consumption if c2 is enabled?
thanks,
May ChengC2 Auditing is not available on SQL Server 7 - it's only available on
SQL Server 2000.

C2 Audit and BCP

I have a system that requires the functionality of c2 audit mode.
Unfortunately most the manipulations that will be taking place on this
system will be using BCP (actually they'll be using IRowsetFastLoad, but the
effect is the same).
If I use Profiler to record SQL statements each of the BCP transactions
comes out as insert bulk SQL statement.
But the audit event just contains garbage (little squares, non-printable
characters) and does not enable me to determine anything useful at all.
Has anyone else encountered this?
Has anyone been able to log BCP statements using c2 audit on SQL Server 2000
SP3a?
Does anyone know if a bug already exists for this?
Thanks.
J.T.BCP will use Native mode by default unless you specify character mode.
What exactly are you wanting to see?
Thanks,
Kevin McDonnell

This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties, and confers no rights.|||I'd like to be able to identify that an "insert bulk" statement has
occurred.
All of the SQL Statements that are run are identified solely by the
permission event, we have to look at the text data column in Profiler to
establish what the SQL was - but when we use BCP we get a few permission
events but nothing legible in the text data column.
This isn't an issue with the functionality of BCP, it's an issue with the
audit events that profiler picks up.
What I'd like is to find the same text captured in the permissions event
(which is part of the audit set of events) as it captured by the SQL
statements events (which logs the "insert bulk" statement and identifies the
table and columns).
Thanks.

When the audit mode is set to 1 and reconfigured ,
Sql Profiler can read audit file which have a colum called HostName record
the computer name of source Computer. How can I change this vaue to the

data columns for C2 Audit option.
Can I change the audit's file to another directory ?
No, you cant change the directory.

I have SQL 2K with SP4. Oracle client is installed on the Server. I have created linked server to Oracle. I am abld to connect to Oracle Server through DTS but when I query an oracle linked server SQl Server crashes with "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" error.

Hi Sreejith,

I've moving your post to the Database Engine forum. Your issue isn't a documentation issue and you'll likely get a better response in that forum.

c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION on Linked server access

Hi,
My server is running SQL Server 7.00.1063 on Windows 2000 Server SP3. A couple of linked server are configured on this server. These linked servers connect to SQL 7 servers, and also SQL 2000 servers.
If I try to use one of these linked servers in a SELECT query, I always get an access violation. System tables or user tables in any database, it don't work. A simple query like SELECT * from LINK1.master.dbo.sysprocesses crashes. Even a query on a non
-existing table (i.e. SELECT * FROM LINK1.my_db.dbo.unknowntable) crashes with an acces violation. I tried to create a new linked server, but this new one still don't work. Even worse: if I try SELECT * FROM A.B.C.D, It crashed with an access violation
instead of raising an error telling that A is not in sysservers...
I tried to reboot the server, but that didn't solve anything.
I ran a DBCC CHECKDB on all databases, but no error was found.
If this can helps to identify the problem, this is the Short Stack Dump found in the SQL000000.dmp files:

Hi,
I solved my problem. @.@.servername was returning NULL instead of server name. I used sp_dropserver / sp_addserver and restarted SQL Server. The problem is gone.

c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION on Linked server access

Hi,
My server is running SQL Server 7.00.1063 on Windows 2000 Server SP3. A cou
ple of linked server are configured on this server. These linked servers co
nnect to SQL 7 servers, and also SQL 2000 servers.
If I try to use one of these linked servers in a SELECT query, I always get
an access violation. System tables or user tables in any database, it don't
work. A simple query like SELECT * from LINK1.master.dbo.sysprocesses cras
hes. Even a query on a non
-existing table (i.e. SELECT * FROM LINK1.my_db.dbo.unknowntable) crashes wi
th an acces violation. I tried to create a new linked server, but this new
one still don't work. Even worse: if I try SELECT * FROM A.B.C.D, It crash
ed with an access violation
instead of raising an error telling that A is not in sysservers...
I tried to reboot the server, but that didn't solve anything.
I ran a DBCC CHECKDB on all databases, but no error was found.
If this can helps to identify the problem, this is the Short Stack Dump foun

c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION after stopping/starting servi

On a nightly basis, SQL services are stopped to perform backups.
Afterwards the services are started.
This has been working for years.
Middle of last week, SQL has been failing to start.
SqlDumpExceptionHandler: Process 4844 generated fatal exception c0000005
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. SQL Server is terminating this process.
It requires a REBOOT to bring SQL back up.
No maintenace has been applied, Windows or SQL Server.

Have you seen this page yet? http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=814572
Second question:
Why do you stop/start SQL to run backups? You can run "hot" backups
using the BACKUP command or a maintenance plan, then backup those
backup files.|||Tracey
Thanks for the prompt reply.
As for #2:
We have the oppurtunity to do so.
It's a cleaner backup.
I feel better with it.
If our nightly window gets tight, then we will switch to HOT backup only.
Yes, we do have a maintenance plan in place to do backups, reorg and index
maintenance.
This is not causing the prioblem.
We've been doing it this way for some time.
I'm the only SQL DBA this company has had.
Something changed last week.
It was not WIN maintenance.
It was not SQL Server maintenance.
As to #1:
Yes, I've seen that posting.
This is at SP4, or so I've been told, and has been for the past 6 months.
I used Microsoft Update and it indicates no fixes availible for Sql Server
2005.

It's the anti-virus software McAfee.
It upgraded itself the other week.
I've gotten around the problem by shutting down the McAfee services before
restarting the MS SQL services.
Right or wrong, it works.

c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION

We have SQL Server 2000 with SP3 installed on Windows 2000 Advance Server. Server has 8 GB RAM and 4 CPU. Few days back we have installed multiple named instance on this server .Now we have assign each CPU to individual instance and min server memory to 1024 and max server memory is kept open.

After this we are facing an issue with default instance for exception_access_violation as below ...

Available Physical = 1252 MB
Total Page File = 15480 MB

Any idea ?Can you install SP4? this KB seems to indicate this is fixed in SP4: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821741/en-us?spid=2852&sid=1070

What's in the SQL Server log file just before the dump?|||Is there any workaround other than upgrading to SP4. as SQL Server crashing daily twise and SP4 upgrade testing will take atleast a week time.|||I don't have a workaround for you, sorry. Maybe PSS could suggest one if you call them.|||As suggested only MS PSS can give more idea why the stack dump is created. It is better to proceed that way to resolve this issue and also SP3 for SQL2000 is no more supported, you have to test and upgrade to SP4 for SQL.

c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION

I have searched this newsgroup and Google. It seems that with this error I
should just call PSS? The SQL (see error.log attached) runs fine from Query
Analyzer, but not from my application (other queries run fine though). It
worked up until yesterday. I rebooted the server. I had an associate apply
SP4, but it still throws this exception. I'm having my partner run Dell
diags on it during lunch. The server is in California, I'm in Tennessee.
I also get this Events in the Event Log when the query is fired:

Error: 0, Severity: 19, State: 0
language_exec: Process 57 generated an access violation. SQL Server is

For the sake of the list, and anyone else that may have this problem. I
checked my log files, they were HUGE! We had moved servers, and whoever
setup the backups didn't back up the logs. I shrank the logs using the

Sorry, specs:
Dell PowerEdge, Windows 2003 SP1, SQL2000 SP4.
The only change I am aware of is SP4, previously (yesterday), it had SP3a.

C++ SSCE example

Hi

Does anyone have an example code in C++ to create a SSCE db and access data?

Many thanks

Ozzie

Install the developer tools SDK. You you find at the following location assuming default installation path.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.1\SDK\Samples\NorthwindOleDb.zip

This is a device sample, but you can port it to desktop. Or you can copy paste code, the code for creating/opening and other database operations would be the same for device & desktop.

|||I have attempted to run the NorthwindOleDb project. The project builds without errors and when I start it it opens in the Pocket PC 2003 emulator but fails when trying to create the dialog to display employee info and fails at the line:
hr = InitDatabase();
I have SSCE dll's installed, the SSCE SDK and VS 2005 SP1. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Im sure this should just work straight out of the box.
