Calculate Yearly Sales Difference
I've been using Crystal Reports a little bit for about a year now, but have never created a report like this.
The report I am working on displays:
CUSTOMER
2005 SALES $000000.00
2006 SALES $000000.00
TOTAL SALES $000000.00
$ DIFFERENCE $000000.00
% DIFFERENCE $000000.00
I am able to bring up the yearly sales and total sales, but I cannot figure out how to calculate the difference. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.I think you must create a query in command query in database expert:
one command query for select sum(sales) from tablename where year=2005 group by year... also another command query for 2006 and compute the difference between the two field in report using formula.
i know it is not nice suggestion but if you have no other idea then try this.|||Thanks for the idea.
I'll take a look and see if I can get it to work.sql

Calculate in report or in stored procedure
shows values, whereas the other shows percentages. I would like to code this
as one report that modifies its display behaviour based on a parameter that
is passed in ( value 'P' or 'V').
The format of the cells in the grid will be an expression, giving integer
for values and one decimal place for percenatges.
If the percentages version is requested I can do the percentage calculation
in one of two places...
1. in the report with an expression against the cell Value.
2. in the stored procedure so that percentages are returned.
Which is best practice? If ReportingServices is running on the same SQL
Server as the source database is there a preference for overall performance?
Thanks,
AndrewHello Andrew,
Calculating in Report will run the calculating works in the
ReportingService process.
My suggestion is that you could calculating in the stored procedure which
is faster.
Also for the performance consideration, you could use the Report Cache.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Wei Lu

My personal preference is to do as much as possible in the stored
procedure. As far as performance gain, it depends on the size of the
returned dataset to the report and how complicated the expressions are
in the report. That said, you should be able to use some fairly simple
expressions to achieve the results you are looking for. So you could
use an expression similar to this in the Format property:
=iif(Parameters!ParameterName.Value = "P", #,0.0%, #,0)
Hope this helps.

ties in with your answers. So, I'll calculate the percentage in the sproc
and the format in the report.

Caching reports
uses parameters that are supplied when the report is executed. There are
allso additional parameters that are used in filters and displayed on the
report (such as title information). I have set up the reports to be cached
and modified the parameters in the report that are not used in the Query with
<UsedInQuery>False. If I run the report with all the same parameters the
Cache seems to work well. If I change one of the parameters used as a filter
the cache is not used. Is there any way around this?
What would be even better is if I could set up cacheing on the shared data
source instead of the report and cache the data for all reports that uses the
same query.
ThanksIt sounds like the report cache includes filters in its caching of data.
It's important to remember that the cache is not just a cache of query data,
but a cache of data the way it will be used in the report, ready for
rendering to any of several different formats.
Now, you could work on the SQL side of things, to see if you can streamline
your datasource (the database itself) to work more effeciently with multiple
reports.

Double check that the <UsedInQuery>False</UsedInQuery> that you added are
still in the RDL.
Though I have never determined the exact sequence to duplicate, I have had
times where I believe the Report Designer removed <UsedInQuery> settings and
I had to add them again.
We have done a fair amount of testing with
<UsedInQuery>False</UsedInQuery> and its cache effects, and at least for us
it is definately working as advertised.

affects report snapshots, which is similar to caching.

Caching of reports
I am using the report service to generate all of my reports. The reports are
generated as pdf and then printed.
The following situaton:
- The user fills out a windows form and previews the report. On the preview
he recognised that there is a mistake in the text he filled out and closes
the preview.
- The user corrects the mistake and previews the report again (same report,
same user, same parameters)
- In the preview the report has not changed !!!!
I have set all the reports not to cache (store no temporary copies of the
report).
When I use SQL Profiler to analyze whats going on on the sql server the
following messages appear:
"exec GetChunkPointerAndLength @.SnapshotDataID = 'A8A41F0F-2C70-4D7D-BE21-DD3BD5F0E921', @.IsPermanentSnapshot = 1, @.ChunkName
= N'CompiledDefinition', @.ChunkType = 0"
and after that a few calls of:
"exec ReadChunkPortion"
Definitly the stored procedure which provides the values for the report is
not called.
In the scenario shown above the stored procedure must be called everytime
the report is rendered.
How can I configure report services to do so?
Thanks.I am calling the "FlushCache" method before rendering the pdf-file which does
not change the behavior listed below.

I am rendering pdf files direkt from C# code using the webservice render

Caching Deleted
real fast this morning.
However, something happened today and now the caching is gone? What
would delete the cache? Does the cache delete when I deploy new
reports?
I have all of my reports set to use a shared schedule to delete the
cache.
Any suggestions?
Thanks...Check the cache configuration to see when they're set to expire and to
rerun.

Caching a report with parameters
uses a data source with credentials stored.
When I try and setup caching for these reports I cannot for the one with
parameters. I get an error:"Credentials used to run this report are not
stored" even though they are.
Is this by design or do I need to do soimething else.
ThanksIt is by design. See my post

Cached reports REQUIRE that SQL Server used SQL Server authentication (or mixed)?
I am trying to setup cached reports so that one of my larger reports doesn't have to be re-run every time someone wants to view it (the data source only updates every 24 hours).
Anyway I made a new data source, set the report to use that, and in that data source I said to use "SQLexampleUserName" as the stored credentials.
Now when I go to run the report it says: Login failed for user 'username'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
This is referenced in the MSKB here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555332
Which makes sense, but now my question is: If I want to used a cached report do I HAVE to allow SQL Server Credentials?
I was using Windows Authentication only up to this point.
Yes, you can still use windows credentials for cached reports. To use windows user credentials, in the report properties, on the data sources tab, select 'credentials stored securely in the report server' then enter yorur windows creds, check the use as windows credentials checkbox, then click apply.
Hope that helps,
-Lukasz
|||I'm afraid I'm still having trouble.
I followed your steps from the report manage web based interface and now I have:
An error has occurred during report processing.
Cannot create a connection to data source 'My-Server'.
Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\testuser'.
To make the changes I went to the Data Sources tab as you said, then selecteed "A Customer Data Source" and the Microsoft SQL Server. My Connection string is:
Data Source= My-Server; Initial Catalog=MyDatabase
Then "credentials stored securely in the report server" and "use as windows credentials when connecting to the data source"
I tried the user name as DOMAIN\user and just user.
Now it may just be that I don't have things configured properly somehow, but the report runs just fine if I use Windows Authentication and don't try to cache the report.
Can I make these adjustments from inside the design studio instead of the web based report manager?
That config seems like it should work, it matches the one I'm used. Couple things to check:
1- Did you add the correct permissions for the test account to actually access the database?
2- Create a local user account, make it an SysAdmin (just to troubleshoot!!!!) and try it that way. I don't use a AD account because that account doesn't need to access any network resources, and have more control over the password reset time, etc. Creating a local account to troubleshoot should also rule out any strange AD issues you might be having.
Don't check the 'impersonate' box (you didn't mention it, so I'm guessing you haven't checked it)
Otherwise, once it's running, you'll want to harden the system by ensuring the account that's cached has the lowest possible permissions needed to execute the reports.
Geof
|||Thank you, I will check on that.
As for security, what permissions does an account need to run a basic report?
If I was reporting off TestDatabase on the server I just need to grant the account a login on the server and then read (public) access to TestDatabase, is that correct?
|||Depends on what security you've added to the basic database, but yes, a login, and then public access as described.
Based on your error message, I think you aren't getting past the login stage. There is no need to grant any access rights to any reportserver system databases.
|||Thanks.
I agree that it appears my test account is having issues as I tried it with my personal account and it works just fine.
I'll review my security permissions and work it out from there..

Cached Report and Windows Authentication
I want to use cached reports with Reporting Services 2005. But when I edit the execution properties of a report, an error message answser that I can't use cache because it has a connexion to Analysis Services with Windows Authentication.
I understand why I can't do that, but I still want to do so, because the reports take too much time to load. How can I do that ?
Thanks.
You can configure the datasource in the report to run using stored credentials. In report manager, go the report and then click on the DataSource tab on the left side, you can store the credentials using that UI.|||Thanks. I tried this and it works, but I don't see better performance...
I thought that I would not see "Generating Report, please wait" any more...
Query the ExecutionLog table in the report server catalog database to see if we are submitting the queries. You can tell by looking at the "rowcount" column. You will also see how much time we are spending in processing and rendering respectively. Processing is the time that it takes for us to create the snapshot, and should be minimized by rendering from the execution cache.
|||TimeDataRetrieval 645 0
TimeProcessing 4855 347
TimeRendering 23518 1090
Source 1 2
ByteCount 10249 10249
RowCount 183 21
Thank you, it seems that the cache is used. The first column is created the first time when the cache is generated, and the second column is created when I open the report a second time. I still got a RowCount > 0, I don't know why... Isn't there a way to tell the ReportServer the generate a .html file as cache, I think it would be much faster.
But then again, it works, so I thank you for your help.
|||We will automatically cache whatever we think is safe to cache. HTML caching can be problematic because there is some session specific information which is embedded in the HTML, so we cannot simply serve up the same HTML to multiple users.Cached Report and Windows Authentication

|||TimeDataRetrieval 645 0
HTML caching can be problematic because there is some session specific information which is embedded in the HTML, so we cannot simply serve up the same HTML to multiple users.Wednesday, March 7, 2012
Cached instances require credentials - why?
TIASince cached reports are shared between users (first user incurs the penalty
of retrieving data and processing the report, subsequent users enjoy the
benefits :-)), if the connection is based on integrated security you might
end up showing user A data which only user B should see.
So for example, it wouldn't make much sense to cache the paycheck report .
In this case, you want each user to get the paycheck information based on
who they are, so integrated security is an option. But you don't want Mary
getting John's paycheck report.

Cache vs Snapshot
noticed that I can cache or create a snapshot of the reports.
I currently use a Crystal Command line tool to run crystal reports around
4:00 am, and I would like to do the same for some of my reports.
What is the difference and which peroforms faster?
Thanks for your help.I figured it out and thought I would put it here for someone else to learn
from.
A cache is only created when the report is first run, then it can expire
when you want it to. A snapshot runs on your schedule, and stays in history.
I would like a mix, the ability to load the report the first time from the
snapshot, but give the users the ability to run it again with date ranges.
Oh well :)

it's returned, not in the query. If you want to have a cache preloaded, you
can set up a process to call the report with a NULL rendering extension.
That will execute the query without returning the results.

You are basically saying that I can query the data with a larger date range,
or none at all, cache it, then when the user queries the information, they
are querying the info from the cache?
If so, it this easy, or am I going to have to do some aspx programming?
Thanks for your reply.

design; you can filter groups (check the properties of your List, Table,
Matrix, etc.). To kick off the null report, you may be able to simply
launch a URL using the Windows scheduler. I think the syntax is this:
&rs:Format=NULL

I can run the report and leave my variables off of the query, just get the
whole mess. Then I can use parameters and they can be entered by the user at
run-time.
So the cache will simply sit on the server, and when the user hits the query
and passes parms, the report will be run off of the cache, and not directly
hit the SQL Server.
Am I close?

Since you're running off the cache, and filtering that, then at rendering
time it puts more load on the reporting engine, but zero load on the
back-end database. And that's perfectly fine if the back-end query was
where the thing was bogging down to begin with. So your cache will have a
superset of all the various data your end-users will see on the same report.

One last question... I did as you said, but I cannot get my date to
filter. The date field is datetime, but when I try '10/1/2004' or without
the quotes, or even add time, it says that the data is not comparable.
Also, I have been having a hard time scheduling the null report, but I have
not given up yet.
Thanks again

Have you verified that the null report works by calling the URL directly
from a browser? I'm not an expert on scheduling, so perhaps someone else
can help you with that.

Cache problem in Report Services
We developed 40 reports using Reporting services, all reports having
parameters, data source for all reports are views. I am facing problem
of may be cache. I am using url method to show reports, i wrote a ASP
page on link of report i am using report server url to show like -
http://servername/reportserver/fold...arOrderNo=2067,
but when i click on the link, it shows old data in report and when i
press refresh button given with RS it will refresh and shows the
updated data, every time to get updated data i have to press refresh
button. Can anyone suggest me how to show updated data on report
whenever it gets fired? Please my project submission data is too short,
suggest me asap
Thank You
Regards
Rajeshhi Raj,
I had the same problem (I'm not a developer) but managed to find the cause
and got my developer to fix it.
I don't have the solution to hand now, but if you don't get the solution by
the time I get to work and find the solution, I'll post it by tomorrow
morning.
Immy
p.s. You should try to post this message in the reporting services
newsgroup.

to append the command 'ClearSession=true' to the url at some point.
this should get you on your way if it can't wait until later.

Cache a temporary copy of the report. How to set for multiple repo
Is there a utility to set cache a temporary copy of the report for multiple
reports, instead of going to execution properties of each report? I have
close to a 100 reports to which I need to set this to expire after 2 hours
(120 min.).
Thanks,
Sam.You could use the RS.exe utility.
Create a script using the object model, and pass it in to the utility...
The object model is documented in Reporting Services Web Service Library In
Books on line.
There is also 2 samples which should be in the scripts subdirectory of your
RS install..

C# render method error - invalid arguements
works perfect but this example bombs on the render method:
ReportingService rs = new ReportingService();
rs.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
DataSourceCredentials[] credentials = null;
byte[] result = null;
string reportPath = "/Capital Request/Request";
string historyID = null;
string format = "PDF";
string devInfo = "<DeviceInfo><HTMLFragment>false</HTMLFragment><Zoom>100</Zoom><Toolbar>FALSE</Toolbar></DeviceInfo>";
string showHideToggle = null;
string encoding;
string mimeType;
Warning[] warnings = null;
ParameterValue[] reportHistoryParameters = null;
string[] streamIDs = null;
SessionHeader sh = new SessionHeader();
rs.SessionHeaderValue = sh;
try
{
result = rs.Render(reportPath, format, historyID,
devInfo, parameters, credentials,
showHideToggle, out encoding, out mimeType,
out reportHistoryParameters, out warnings,
out streamIDs);
sh.SessionId = rs.SessionHeaderValue.SessionId;
}
The error is as follows:
CS1502: The best overloaded method match for
'RSProxy.ReportingService.Render(string, string, string, string,
RSProxy.ParameterValue[], RSProxy.DataSourceCredentials[], string, ref
string, ref string, ref RSProxy.ParameterValue[], ref

I have tried everything. Any help is appreciated.use the ref keyword in place of the out keyword.

and mimetype variables were not set:
string showHideToggle = null;
string encoding;
string mimeType;
I got an unassigned variable error so I did the following:
string showHideToggle = null;
string encoding=null;
string mimeType=null;
and it worked. This example came straight out of BOL. Seems there is
a problem with the example. Thats for correcting that for me. I
really appreciate it as I have been working on this for about two
weeks.
